First recorded in Edo-period anecdotes, it made its most memorable appearance in the haiku poet Yosa Buson’s playful sketches, where a lone samurai is halted by a stranger who, after requesting attention, turns around and flashes a glowing, lidless eye nestled in his nether regions. What does it want? Nothing. It says nothing. It just stares. Scholars half-suspect Shirime to be satirical—a grotesque parody of the samurai’s solemn vigilance, or a fart joke elevated to the spiritual plane. In a culture where formality masks chaos, Shirime pulls down the curtain—and its trousers. It’s not malevolent, just startling, like all of life’s sudden indignities. That eye, unblinking and misplaced, reminds us: not all omens are lofty; some squat in the dark and wink from very unexpected places. Our glorious Shirime tee has been printed using low-waste technology by a certified organic company in the UK. For your peace of mind, we offer free UK returns and exchanges.

Among Japan’s teeming ranks of spirits and yōkai, the Shirime (meaning literally 'arse eye') stands out—if only because it chooses to give you a hard...
["organic-icon.png","low-carbon-icon.png","ethical-icon.png
Printed T-shirt
Certified Organic Cotton t-shirt, 155g/m2.
