It appears as a woman whose neck stretches unnaturally long, often emerging at night to haunt or spy on people. This particular artwork, inspired by ukiyo-e woodblock prints—most notably those by Utagawa Kuniyoshi—reflects the Edo period's fascination with ghost stories, known as kaidan. The Rokurokubi was symbolic of hidden duality—an ordinary appearance masking a ghostly truth, often interpreted as a metaphor for suppressed desires or societal pressures on women. It would have originally served both as entertainment and moral commentary, typical of Edo-period storytelling and visual culture, where the fantastical was used to subtly critique or explore deeper human anxieties and societal norms. It's important to us at Above the Lore that our tees are made the right way—that's why we use natural materials and renewable energy in our supply chain.
