At first glance, it appears to be a gathering of strange creatures: spiky, wide-eyed beings rendered in brilliant red, blue and black, standing in silent formation against a field of white. Yet, this was not fantasy illustration but advertising. Klinger, one of the great pioneers of modern graphic design, created the poster for the printing firm Hollerbaum &amp; Schmidt at a moment when European commercial art was shedding Victorian clutter and embracing bold simplicity. The creatures are less characters than visual ideas\u2014pure shape, colour and rhythm arranged with extraordinary confidence. More than a century later, the image feels remarkably contemporary.
