Known as 'Hob's End' when the station opened in 1863, its name was updated in 1888 following a fire, whereupon an additional 'b' was appended and the possessive apostrophe was dropped. However, there has been much debate about why exactly this occurred. The station hit the headlines in 1959, when an excavation of the site reportedly uncovered a\u00a0Nazi propaganda weapon buried during the Blitz. This was described as a facsimile 'spaceship' \u2014 complete with dummy alien bodies \u2014 designed to create local panic.\u00a0There have also been widespread reports of supernatural activity at the station over its history.
